Math Field Trip Lessons: Shopping Time

Math lessons can be done almost anywhere and they don't necessarily involve cramming all of today's worksheets into a notebook and trying to scribble through them in the back seat.

All your student needs is a calculator, notebook and pencil and you're ready to go!

1. Next time you go to the grocery store have these supplies ready.

2.Have your child write down all of the items they pick to eat and the price.

3. Give them a number amount of money to write down. This will be their budget for the shopping trip.

4. When they are done shopping, allow them to calculate the cost of all their purchases and see how much is left over or needed to purchase.

5. Explain to them what a budget is and what a deficit and surplus is. Which do they have?
